Make Walk and Roll to School Day a Win for California Schools this Fall
All across California, planned Walk to School day events are putting a spring in our step this October! From the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Walk to School Day LA Event to some exciting incentives being offered to increase participation in the San Francisco Bay Area, there has never been a better time to make Fire Up Your Feet a part of your school’s Walk and Roll to School outreach and promotional efforts.
Pulling together a successful walk and roll to school day event does not have to be overwhelming or difficult. Whether you are in San Diego or Sacramento, there are plenty of resources to help you along the way. Make one of your first stops the California Safe Routes to School Technical Resource Center’s website. Here you will find a step-by-step kit to help you prepare, promote and execute your event.
Nothing motivates like a success story and with over 18,000 students from 67 Los Angeles schools participating in The 2014 City of Los Angeles’ Walk To School Day, 2015 has big (running) shoes to fill. But LAUSD is up for that challenge and excited to support and encourage the participation of their schools in Walk to School Day 2015. This event is a strategy of the City’s Safe Routes to School Strategic Plan and the Department of Transportation’s vision to improve traffic safety in our schools’ communities, where the majority of fatal and serious collisions occur. Los Angeles City based schools who register will receive personalized (hands-on) planning and logistics support, and a complementary banner and stickers for a successful event. Non Los Angeles City schools can download and use materials for free.
Farther north, San Francisco had a record-breaking 84 schools and 14,000 students participate in Walk and Roll to School Day last year, a 10% increase in numbers over the prior year’s Walk & Roll to School. This year, Kaiser Permanente’s San Francisco Community Benefits Department is helping to heat up enthusiasm for walking and rolling to school by offering to double the award of any Bay View/Hunter’s Point school that wins a Fire Up Your Feet award. If you represent a school in this region, please contact email@example.com for more information about this opportunity to walk and bike your way to success this fall.
Our Fire Up Your Walk to School awards offer one more great reason to participate in Walk and Roll to School Day. Between October 1-31, any school tracking 50 or more walkers at the conclusion of the Challenge will be entered into a drawing for eight $500 awards. Awards can be used to fund any health or wellness related activity in your school. In order to be eligible, participants must track WALKING activity. Running/jogging or other activities do not count toward this award. Whether you’re in Northern California, Southern California or anywhere in between, Fire Up Your Feet offers one more way to help make your walk and roll to school event a success. Should you have any questions, feel free to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
