Northern California Fall 2016 School Champion Award Winner
Northern California: Live Oak Elementary School, San Ramon
Our "Champion" is Kira Feick, a parent at Live Oak Elementary and mother of a 1st and 3rd grader. She met with Nadine Rosenzweig, Principal of Live Oak Elementary and PJ Dhoot, Transportation Specialist for the City of San Ramon to discuss possible solutions for traffic issues, pedestrian and biker safety. As a result of letters, meetings on the school campus, and traffic site observations, several suggestions were taken back to the city for review. Several suggestions were approved, which includes the lower parking lot at the school being converted to a one-way, and the parking spaces in the lot being re-striped as slanted to emphasize the one-way driving rule. There will be another sign posted at a major intersection to read "No Turn on Red" with allocated times to help avoid pedestrian/biker collision with vehicles, and our Safe Routes to School was re-routed. The new route helps pedestrians and bikers to avoid walking and riding along East Branch Parkway, a major road, and now guides them through a park with a paved path that leads directly to the school. Kira is dedicated to continuing to improve the safety of the Live Oak Elementary students and families. We are grateful for her success in making major changes to make our school traffic safer!
